Basic Things You Must Know About Kidney Cancer
As per the American Cancer Society, annually 2,570 cases are reported in the US and approximately 1470 deaths occur from the disease.
Bone Cancer can occur at any age but the most common types occur in children and young adults. They start in the long bones of the arms and legs mainly. Bone Cancer is of two types, Primary Bone Cancer which starts in the bone tissue and Metastatic Bone Cancer which spreads from other cancerous organs of the body.
The prognosis for Bone Cancer depends on two factors. First of all, the grade of the cancer, the lower the grade the higher the likelihood of it being cured. The second factor is the stage of the cancer, that is, how far the disease has progressed.
Bone Cancer survival rates are high if the cancer is still inside the bone when diagnosed. At this stage a complete surgical resection followed by chemotherapy works well for many types of Bone Cancers.
The main types of Bone Cancers are:
- Osteosarcoma, which affects children and young adults between 10 to 25 years of age. The overall 5 year bone cancer survival rate for this type is 69%. If the cancer is localized at the time of treatment, the survival rate increases to 84%.
- Ewing’s Sarcoma affects younger people between 4 to 15 years of age. The 3 year survival rate for this type of Bone Cancer is 65% if localized, but drops drastically if the cancer has spread.
- Chondrosarcoma occurs in people over the age of 40. The overall 5 year bone cancer survival rate is 30% if the cancer is aggressive, but as high as 90% if slow growing.
Osteosarcoma and Chondrosarcoma account for 35% each for all cases of bone cancers, Ewing’s Sarcoma for 10%, Chondrosarcoma for 5% and the rest by other more rare types of Bone Cancer.
