Stomach Cancer Survival Rates

Thursday, February 5th, 2009

The prognosis and stomach cancer survival rates depend on the type of Stomach Cancer as there are different types like Adenocarcinomas which is the most common type and Lymphomas which are not so common.

Stomach Cancer Survival Rates By Stage

The stage of the cancer is important as it indicates the size and spread of the tumor. The grade of the cancer cells indicate how aggressive the cancer cells are, in general the lower the grade of the cancer cells, the better will be the stomach cancer survival rates of the individual.

Stomach cancer causes 1 million deaths annually worldwide. It is the 4th most common cancer in the world and the 2nd most common for cancer related deaths after lung cancer.

Stomach Cancer Survival Rates: Cancer Definition

Stomach cancer is also called gastric cancer. It occurs slowly over a number of years. It is preceded by pre cancerous changes in the lining of the stomach that rarely produce any symptoms until in the advanced stage. Diagnosis is thus delayed and stomach cancer survival rates are consequently not good.

Treatment is threefold and depends on the stage of cancer at the time of diagnosis. Surgically most of the tumor is removed and then chemotherapy and radiation therapy are given to control the spread of the cancer and extend the survival rate. Complete cures are not a common occurrence.

Worldwide Stomach Cancer Survival Rates

The overall 5 year stomach cancer survival rate is 20%, which means only 1 in 5 will survive 5 years. However, if the cancer is localized, if it has not spread to the lymph nodes, at least 75% of patients survive for 5 years and eventually two thirds of these survivors are cured.

Stomach cancer survival rates based on the stages of the cancer give an overall 70% for 5 years. Unfortunately, only 1 % of all cases are detected at this stage. 6% of cases are detected at stage 2 and their 5 year survival rate is 42%. A reasonable number of patients are diagnosed at stage 3 and their survival rate is 20% for 5 years. An overwhelming majority of 80% Stomach Cancer cases is detected at stage 4 and their 5 year stomach cancer survival rates at this very advanced stage is barely 5%.

thx 4 this valuable, honest information

  2. innocent says:

someone can tell me the survival rate for someone who has
any advanced stomach cancer(stage4),if he or she is taken the surgery but no chemo or other.

    thanks,i wait for response.

  3. Going for Round 2 says:

can not offer an accurate rate, but I can offer our family experience. It has been nearly 3 years since a family member has what is called a D2 resection followed by radiation and infusion therapy (5FU), which is the surgical removal of the affected area and surrounding lymph nodes, for stage 3B gastric cancer.

In all honesty it has been 35 months since the procedure, to the day. Yesterday we were informed that it was time for another biopsy. 35 months later a mass is detected in the abdomen.

Until the actual biopsy I can not go into further detail, but at this time the only thing stated with affirmation is that typically if scar tissue is going to show up as a result of radiation it will likely do so before this time.

This is perhaps the most brutally honest information that I have found in my last 3 plus years of researching both gastric cancer and metastatic lung cancer. Unlike many doctors who provide hope and optimism so that patients do not simply give up, it is information like this that does help others prepare for the journey that they are about to embark on.

Life is short. Live without regret, and “don’t blink”.

  8. Dee says:

My husband has grade 4 fast growing stomach cancer. He has 3 tumors, one that protrudes from his right side is the size of a large grapefruit, the others are inside. It has spread to his R-lung and also his R-buttock. Surgery has been cancelled because of the fast growth and he is scheduled for Chemo. He is in a great deal of pain with the Stomach growth. I have become his enemy and the person he growls at. I try to do everything for him but nothing seems to be enough or right. I believe this must be common, but it is so difficult to handle. occasionaly I lose my cool, and then I feel terrible. I feel like his time with me is short, the doctors have not said this but I feel it must be true. Just when I feel that I have no more tears, another bucket full appears. God bless all of you that are experiencing this terrible disease that gets such a tight grip on our loved ones.

  11. Julie Perry says:

    Dolly Caballero,

I am so sorry for your loss! If you want to avoid cancer in yourself or your children, the best way to avoid it is to eat a plant based diet. Avoid meat and dairy, and you should be fine, and very healthy to boot. May God bless you and your children, and keep you in His care!

  12. Julie Perry says:

    Dolly,

I forgot to add that my 39 year old husband is also enduring stage 4 gastric cancer. I wish we had this information a lot sooner!

  13. Laura says:

Please help me! My husband was diagnosed with stomach cancer on April 7th, on 19th underwent stomach surgery where they removed 80% of his stomach. They were able to remove 32 lymph nodes which the forst 11 are infected with cancer. W are awaiting to do a PET scan and then perhaps chemo and radiation. No one has told us survival rates, so we had assumed this wasn’t a question. Are we fooling ourselves? Do we need to be preparing for possible death in the next few months or years? Everything I am reading shows a 5 year survival rate, is this possible? I was told he is Stage 3 C I think. What does this mean for us? I need someone to tell me the truth. Please. Good or bad, at least we will know how to move forward! Please!

  14. Adela says:

An associate of mine had stomach cancer and he had surgery to remove the cancer. He refused chemo/radiation, and tried a holistic approach with all-raw foods only. Initially he went through a raw-food juice cleansing diet after surgery and he is now a stomach cancer survivor for 10+ years. He continues to consume only raw/organic foods, which keeps his body pH alkaline. Junk food causes a highly acidic pH environment and cancer cells thrive in an acidic environment. Hope this helps. I know several other friends and associates with other types of cancer who have been healed this way of their cancer even in stage 3 and 4, but they all had surgery to remove the initial tumor/cancer first and refused chemo/radiation.

  16. Doug says:

I was diagnosed with stomach cancer on 10-16-10. I had 9 weeks of chemo, half my stomach removed, and then another 9 weeks of chemo. I was very blessed and was stage II. I am doing pretty well. Starting to get my strength back and getting used to new eating habits.

I’m new to this world, dad just diagnosed today. I read 65% don’t make it beyond 6 months in the later stages…guess that starts at Stage 3??

I’m a believer in Eastern medicine to either replace Western chemotherapy or augment it if used in conjuction. I’ll be doing lots of research and will report back what I find…I want him to last the football season, he loves the Eagles. He’s definitely Stage 3 or 4 reading the symtoms…all the way to a bad ulcer before we found out.

    Hi,

My father was diagnosed with stomach cancer Stage 2 N1 on 8/8/10. His treatment will be 12 weeks of chemo then surgery and then more chemo and radiation. He is on a clinical trial. He is 56 years old. His chemo medications are Cisplatin, Erbitux and Irinotecan. His first chemo treatment was rough, since it was his first exposure to the drug and with cisplatin the nurses had to pre and post hydrate him since it’s so toxic. He had a picc line installed for IV chemo so that his veins won’t collapse. He had his second chemo last week and he wasn’t as nauseous. Although he has a cough with lots of phelm( no discoloration…just white phlem). Not sure if it is a infection or just the cancer causing the phelm. He does fell very tired this week and started noticing weight loss from chemo and start developing pimples on his nose and chest and back.

    Here are my questions:

Should he be avoiding meats and diaries while on chemo?
Is pre and post operative chemo the best way to go nowadays for treatment?

Has anyone done pre and post operative surgery treatment? How was the outcome?

Hi … my name is Marie … I had a beautiful 4yr old daughter when I was diagnosed with stomach cancer last May(2009).. it was devastating, frightening and I had a very unsure what my outlook would be ..

I underwent 9 weeks of chemotherapy, a month off to rest then a life-saving but also life-threatening 7 hour operation to remove 80% of my stomach(November) .. I was the second youngest in the hospital to be diagnosed with this particular cancer … I was 41 ..

Now I’ve had the equivalent to a gastric bypass that can cost £10,000 and I don’t need to diet !! Downside??? .. pretty crap the first 3-6 months after the op.. any advice I would give … stay on simple , bland, soft foods , avoid protein foods for a few weeks or a month , eat little and often and eat don’t gulp it down.. please contact me if you need any support or advice .. my email is caitlinsrainbow@yahoo.co.uk.. I know how frightening you are feeling .. there is hope .. and you will be ok xx

My husband died of stomach cancer five years ago. What was truly ironic was that he was going for colonoscopies every five years because his brother died of colon cancer. We were checking the wrong end of his intestines. So, now I urge everyone I know to get an endoscopy when they get the colonoscopy. There is absolutely no additional discomfort to having this procedure done at the same time. Some doctors may resist, but if you tell him/her that you have GERD, acid reflux or other upper gastric problems and insist on the procedure, they will usually comply. if not, find a doctor who will. My husband might be alive now if we had known this.

  26. Stephanie says:

Hi everyone. My husband was diagnosed June 09 with stage IV stomach cancer. He lost his battle this August. Cancer in any form is a devasting disease but this one needs some national attention. There is not enough research, awareness or screenings to help detect this early. They have passed a resolutin in congress making November National Stomach Cancer Awareness month. For all of you on this journey to beat this monster, I will hold you in my prayers. I have done so much research and I found myself where each of you are at and that is without information. If I can be the shoulder you need to lean on or the ear you need to vent into, please don’t hesitate. I am not going to lie, this is a very deadly disease and I will do anything in my power to help stop it.Feel free to look me up on facebook. http://www.facebook.com/thecamillis I leave this in memory of my husband, Patrick Camilli…

  30. ELLY says:

I wanted to clarify what 5 year survival means. It is usually calculated observing a large number of patients for a long period of time after diagnosis. 20% 5 year survival rate means that on average 20% of patients being observed live 5 years from diagnosis. Of the 20% some will live longer than that. There is no way to calculate that. Each human beeing is different from each other and such rates should be considered only as an indication and not as word of God….. do not apply such rate to anyone you know because it will be wrong and will take you away from what is really important which is how to face the end of life with dignity. We are all different, some people have the strength and will to survive more than others, others are simply ready to let it go. We are never prepared to die and loose who we love, we should enjoy everyday with the people we love no matter if sick or not just as it was the last day.
A number is nothing …forget about it.

  31. Margaret says:

Hi, Daniel, I am praying for you and all the rest of you who have cancer or family members with it. I am 64 and I am waiting for the results of my biopsy. My husband was diagnosed with stomach cancer in April 2010. They removed his stomach after 5wks of chem & radiation, then he went back after 2 months and they did 75ml of chemo which almost killed him, he had 2 more 75ml of chemo to go but refused it. He is now cancer free as the Dr’s say, but what does that mean he is loosing weight like crazy, from 220lb he’s now down to 163 lb it’s so scary to see him deteriate right in front of my eyes. Does anybody have answer please let me know

  35. Angela says:

My uncle was diagnosed with Stage 4 stomach cancer 3 weeks ago. I took him to see an oncologist at Duke Medical to see if he could participate in their clinical trials, as I have heard that the clinical trial drugs have been known to prolong life of a cancer patient. The good news is that he is a good candidate for it, the bad news is that his cancer has spread to his lymph nodes and other parts of his body. at this point, we were told nothing would work except chemo, which would basically be to keep the pain away and try to keep it from spreading further. I am not a doctor but based on what the oncologist at Duke told us, surgery is not a good idea if it has spread throughout the body, especially the lymph nodes. My prayers to you and your families

  36. Mike says:

To those that have been diagnosed with stomach cancer, to those with loves ones battling stomach cancer and to those that have survived stomach cancer my thoughts and prayers are with you all. I lost my dearest brother to cancer on September 9th,2010. He was 44 years old. He had no severe symtom prior to being diagnosed with stage 3. He was having problems swallowing and was wrongly diagnosed by the ENT at the emergency room. It took almost two months for him to get proper diagnosis. He was was finally diagnosed in February. The oncologist told him that the cancer was treatable and that he would start him on a regiment of chemo therapy. My brother gradually lost the ability to swallow and had a feeding tube inserted in his intestine. He completed his first round of chemo. He was re-evaluated by the surgeon. The surgeon advised my brother continue the chemo therapy instead of surgery. He felt that the tumor was too large and did not want to remove too much of the stomach. My brother continued the second round of chemotherapy. The chemotherapy never worked for him, yet the doctors never told him that the chemo was not working. I went to visit him in August. Only to find that he was in a lot of pain and he had not been placed under pain management. He had been prescribed pain medication that was no longer affective. He had to be hospitalized 3 times because the pain was so severe. I had to intefere and speak to the oncologist.I felt that my brother should of had proper pain medication. When I spoke to the doctor he told me that my brother was dying and that he had liver cancer. I was aware that a few lesions had been found in the liver but no test were ever done. At the very moment when the doctor told me that my brother had cancer in the liver I asked him what kind of testing had been performed to determine that my brother was dying if liver cancer. He response to me was “WE HAVE GREAT SUSPECION”. I decided at that moment that I needed to bring my brother back home with me. He was hospitalized at New York Prespetirian on August 24th. The doctors did everything they could for him. They determined that my brother did not have liver cancer. My brother died 11 days after being admitted. He died knowing that the doctors in New York did everything they could for him. They made his last few days as comfortable as they could be. Don’t loose hope and always go for a second opinion. Never let one doctor dictate your future.

my father was diagnosed with stomach cancer which has spread to about 9 lymp nodes and separatly he also got diagnosed with lung cancer which is a 2inch mass in his lower lobe. he just started aggressive chemo for both diff cancers. he first recieves chemo for his lung which takes some hours then a 46hr chemo for his stomach. it takes him 3 days total to complete his session. then he gets 3 weeks off before returning and starting the whole process again. i realize that its not looking positive for his future but i would like to know about how long someone with 2 separate diagnosises against him can tight for. he is in great health mentally and physically and is 66yrs. im going to take care of him in 10 days and his 26yr old wife & i will be his primary care giver. although im a great cook, i dont know what i should be cooking him. also, what to expect and how to cope with it all. what kills me is that his wife who is 40yrs younger than him, doesnt seem to realize the severity of the sitution… she is planning on bring him to Mc Donalds for breakfast on the way to his next apt and other stupid selfish things like that. i mean, really… fast food! also, he seems more worried that it will upset his wife that im coming to help instead realizing that i dont care who gets upset or not, i just want my father to have the best chance of survival so he doesnt leave me so soon. this is his second time having cancer, the first time was with prostate cancer 2yrs ago in which his wife (who was currently his girlfriend) left him and got her self another boyfriend until he was cured of the cancer, and then magically shows back up into his life. she has full control of his wallet and is not wasting anytime spending it, he is a wealthy guy who earned his every dollar. i think i might regret it if i dont step in and protecting his well being mentally, physically and protecting his earnings… but on the other hand, i dont want to start any waves that might make him weaker. does anyone have any advice for me? plz i dont want resentments or regrets that i could of helped my father life another day.

Daniel, Be strong my young friend. That is your key!! My name is Mark, I just lost my dad a month ago. He had Stage 4 stomach cancer that spread from his kidney he had removed. He was 65 always strong but he quit eating. No strength=No fight, They diagnosed him in the summer and he started on 2 or 3 new drugs. They were pills no chemo. The first round worked great then just stopped. His stomach started filling up with fluid again so he quit eating. When he quit eating he spiraled down out of control!! Try to eat keep your body fighting!!!!!!!!!!!!

  45. Susan says:

I was diagnosed with stomach cancer in June, 2007. The doctor removed 80% of my stomach. It was stage 1 cancer, so no chemo or radiation after the surgery. But I continue to struggle with indigestion and gas problems since then. Last April I was experiencing extreme discomfort and fatigue. I did a blood test and found out I was dangerously low in my iron level. Regular level is between 22 to 122 and I was only 7. So to all my survivor friends here, please remember to take iron pills and vitamin B12 regularly.

  46. Ranju says:

My brother ( aged 42) was very energetic & was a tea-totaller. When he lost his appetite vigorously we went to the doctor, who said that he was in stage 4 cancer ( Adenocarcenoma). When we asked for a surgery he suggested chemotheraphy. Even after 3 therapies, he showed only 20 % improvement. The doctor suggested more strong medicines of chemotheraphy. He din’t inform us the side effects. We want our brother to survive & hence accepted whatever the doctor said.

Due to heavy dosage of medicines, he got a hole in his stomach & the doctor stopped giving chemo. Slowly one by one of his organs stopped functioning & he left this world on 16th of this year. I request the doctors not to experiment & play with the life of the patients. Please advice the side-effects of the treatment the patient is undergoing.
Though the doctors should not give false hopes, atleast to the patients they should be optimistic, but the doctor we had was always pessimistic & rude enough to tell the patient himself that he will survive for only 6 months.

I pray god that atleast in future doctors should treat the patients with utmost care and there should be some treatment for this cancer.

After a colonoscopy yesterday, we were told that my husband has a gastric tumor in his stomach. We go to a Cancer doctor tomorrow and I am petrified to hear what he is going to tell us. I would like to ask everyone to pray for him that maybe the stage is not as high as it could be and something can be done. Thanks

  48. S. Mendoza says:

Hi. They found a tumor 16/19/5 cm in my dad’s stomach last week. The symptoms started with feeling of fatigue. He had a healthy appetite only until a couple of months ago then he ate less and was feeling full. The brought him to see a doctor for an endoscopy and found the cyst. His hemoglobin dropped but they didnt see any bleeding in the stomach. They did a biopsy but they were told it was inconclusive since the sample taken was too small but they assumed it malignant due to the size.

I am living in a different country so I have not spoken to the doctor yet and just relying on 2nd hand information. They took my dad to another specialist and a different hospital and running more tests. They already told him and my mom. He’s 71 years old and has had ulcers a couple of years ago.

I am still in the denial stage so I don’t know what to expect or how to react. I have not heard about the results of the tests. I am still staying positive. I spoke to my dad but haven’t really started talking about it. They are talking about surgery but may end up removing the stomach if they cant safely remove the tumor. I am really hoping that it is not malignant, if it is that it has not affected surrounding organs or tissues.

I maybe reaching out to some of you for advice and support. God bless all of us and keep all of us close to his heart.

I will post information as I receive them.

My father, Bob, who is 71 years old, just had a Total Gastrectomy on March 5, 2011. It has been a roller coaster since he had his surgery. He had a anastamosis leak which made him very sick and bloated. They finally controlled it with IV antibiotics and an NG Tube. He is going to be discharged from the hospital tomorrow. Home care nurses will be visiting my father..
I’m not sure what stage of cancer he has…and you know what….I really Don’t Want To Know….
I pray each and every night for my “Daddy”… Why does this have to happen….I am so sad…..
Are there any Bibke passages you can recommend???
What are you all doing to cope with this disease for your loved one???

@ S. Mendoza – I too am in the denial phase. I suggest you spend as much time with your fathers you can.. Call him as often as you can…Tell him how much you Love him. Make him laugh…dont treat him like a sick person. This is what I am doing with my “Daddy”.
I will say a prayer for your father and you tonight. God Bless
