In the United States, the 5-year breast cancer survival rate for Stage 2 breast cancer may differ based on the tumor size and if it has reached the lymph nodes or if it is still localized.
Breast cancer that has been detected while still measuring less than 2 centimeters and has spread to the armpit lymph nodes (axillary lymph nodes) is identified as a stage IIA breast cancer.  Based on the declarations of American Cancer Society, National Cancer Institute the survival rate could be 88% to 92%.

Even if the breast cancer already measures from 2-5 centimeters but is still localized, it can still be classified as Stage IIA breast cancer .

However, if the breast cancer already measures 2-5 centimeters and has reached the lymph nodes it now progresses to Stage IIB breast cancer and the 5-year breast cancer survival rate is greatly diminished to 76%-81%.

Even if the breast cancer already measures more than 5 centimeters but still localized, it is still considered in Stage IIB breast cancer .

For white women, 29% of detected breast cancer was already at Stage 2 and 36% for black women.  An average of 62% was detected as Stage 1 breast cancer, still contained within the breast tissues.  If discovered at this early stage, the 5-year breast cancer survival rate is hopefully high at 98%-100%.  There is no better way to survive cancer than early detection of the disease.

The good news for everybody is that there is already a lot of information on how the disease can be detected early.  Ways to be able to diagnose cancer early and enhanced treatment methods are the major reasons for the further improvement of breast cancer survival rates

Women can set-up a schedule to do a monthly self-examination.  When a woman becomes 20 years old, she should already have a check up every three years at the very least.  When she reaches 40, the check-ups should be upped to at least once year, which should include mammogram.

Healthy habits can prevent  breast cancer, such as regular exercise, healthy weight maintenance and lessening of alcohol intake. In fact, these habits should be sustained throughout life as the possibility of getting the disease steps us as one gets older.
